Solo Travellers Tips For Woman Explorers

08 Jan 2024

What were holidays like a couple of decades ago? It was exciting, no doubt, with the kith and kin of the family in attendance.  As the holiday could be to an unknown destination, with language barriers.

The safety of travelling as a family or as in a group gave a sense of security that the trip would go well.  Moreover, the head of the family or tour leader would inculcate certain do’s and don’ts so that the tour goes off smoothly.

The struggle for a world with equal rights in making progress, and women's emancipation is being viewed positively the world over, it gives women solo travellers a sense of freedom to be away from family pressures and enjoy travelling solo.

However, there are challenges when women travel single, especially when they are in unfamiliar surroundings. Therefore, it becomes all the more necessary for women to be adequately equipped with prior information on the destination to be visited, so that they enjoy an unblemished holiday.

Over the years, India’s image has changed. It is no longer conservative and a vibrant economy has resulted in a more “open mindedness”approach to tourism, thereby enhancing the comfort level for solo single woman tourists. However, as it is the best destination across the world to make the trip pleasant, a few tips for travelling solo need to be followed.

So we should keep in mind the following as a woman solo traveller.

Destination familiarity: First check the destination from the internet, how safe it is? Does it have a history of crime? So even within the destination are there any localities to be avoided?  Equip yourself as a woman traveller with as much background information as possible.

Travel Light: As a solo traveller, there is no need to carry too much of luggage. The reason being on needs to be self contained while on the move. This is especially true for the lost cost budget solo traveller.  Just adequate clothing and toiletries should form the basis of the luggage.

Avoid show-off and Jewellery:   It will attract unwanted attraction should you demonstrate any sign of external display of jewellery. This will get noticed in a destination, where as a traveller, you are not fully familiar, and an embarrassment can be avoided by being modest.

Dress code: This is an important aspect of any solo travelling. As a solo, there may be some destinations with certain types of dress being the norm.  This is especially true, if the place to be covered has religious significance or destination places with adventure as a theme. Therefore it is necessary to dress appropriately for the occasion.

Safety first means keeping the next of kin informed: While a solo travel certainly sounds enchanting, it is equally important to share the itinerary with family back home, whether it is as a domestic tourist or as an inbound foreign traveller.

This way it gives confidence to both parties i.e. the solo traveller for making it known where she is to be travelling on a given day and for the family members to know where their ward would halt/camp on a given day.

Places of Stay to be researched: Nowadays with the influx of solo travelling many hotels and resorts have exclusive floors or exclusive cottages (if it is a resort), to factor for the safety of woman solo travellers.

It is best to check which hotels/resorts offer such facilities.   There are also good hostels for solo women travellers. Check their ratings also.  This would give a fairly good idea of the safety involved in planning a stay there.

Stay in touch with family:  This is a safety tip to be adhered to. By sharing and talking to your family members frequently, they get a fair idea of what has transpired day wise in the destination, and they could also anticipate what to expect in future.

If possible try and share a video call with family members on a day to day basis.  The family members will have a peace of mind and will not disturb the itinerary, once they figure out that the daughter is quite safe.

Choose a Reliable Company:   Check the operators credentials including whether they are recognised by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, whether they are member of trade bodies, viz., Indian Association of Tour Operators, or recognised by local Government bodies.

Check for review and years of service provided by the company you choose, also check for their address and landline contact number to confirm.  These days’ many agencies operate remotely without addresses or any accreditations or recognition.  They have only a site and account information.   Avoid such online companies and go with the best tour operator in Karnataka.
