Come September/October every year, the Dasara celebration roars alive in Mysore, with gaiety, fun and frolic which can be witnessed only once in a year. Of course, Mysore as a tourist destination can be visited any time of the year, but the Dasara season is truly special. The core of the festival is the triumph of the good over the evil and the 10 day gala saga is a crowd puller the origin of which dates back to the Vijay Nagar Empire. The event is certainly special as it show cases Karnataka from a Historical and cultural perspective.
Beacon of light adorning the Mysore Palace: The lighting arrangement is truly spectacular. Every evening the light turns on at around 6 p.m. and is lit till 9 p.m., on all the festive days. It is a surreal environment, with evenly placed electric bulbs, focussing on the silhouette of the palace which is to be seen, to be believed. All heritage sites, main roads in Mysore also lighted during 10 days festival give a grand festival look to this heritage city.
The procession from the Mysore Palace to Banni Mandap is the main attraction and perhaps the high light of the festival itself. This is another event, which is a novelty of the Dasara celebrations. The parade consists of motorcycle display in various formations and a torch lit contingent carrying out various drills to thrill the audience is truly awesome. As the torch illumination is done in total darkness, the light emanating from the torches gives a mesmerising feeling and not to speak of special effect that you would normally see on celluloid. It start evening at around 6.30pm goes on for 3 hours non stop.
Te city comes to life virtually. With so many auditoriums in the city, the theme that is generally shown revolves on dance, music and folk lore of various genres. Cultural programmes / shows are organised in 5 venues, eminent artists perform and entertain visitors for 10 days.
This is perhaps one of the best times to savour street foods. With mushrooming vendors, displaying their wares, the fare that they produce will be truly tempting to taste, and eating out is an experience. The visitor thus gets to taste the best of local cuisine which are reasonably priced.
