31 Jul 2023

A destination, which wasn’t a travellers’ choice may be, a decade ago, is fast gaining popularity as a hidden destination of Karnataka. Apart from the scenic splendour comprising of low lands, interspersed with hill ranges and coffee cultivation in the belt has made it an idyllic destination. Little wonder, the place is gaining tourist importance with infra-structure matching the need of the tourism sector. Come, welcome to Chikmagaluru.   A few inscriptions of that era indicate that the town was also known by the name of Kiriya –mugali, situated in a fertile plateau south of Baba Budan hill ranges.

The place is nicely nestled at the foot hills of the Mullayanagiri peak of the Western Ghats on a small plateau and is a tourist favourite for its salubrious climate.

Brief History

The name is derived from3 distinct local words chik (small) magalu (daughter) ooru (place) and when conjuncted reads as Chikmagaluru. Or in simple terms “the land of the younger daughter is an apt description of the town. The local folk lore indicates that the district was given as “dowry”, to the younger daughter of legendary chief Rukmungada.

Terrain and Climate

Chikmagaluru gives a student of Geography, the benefit of seeing stunning mountains, rugged terrains, and lowland meadows, all within a span of 50-75 Kilometres range.  Nestled on the slopes of the Western Ghats, the altitude is 3580 feet and presents a very salubrious climate all throughout the year, thus it is an all year destination.
