7 Things you must do before any International Trip

The key to traveling abroad is being prepared. Before you jet off to a foreign country, take care of these important to-dos.

Make sure your passport and visa are up to date

Most countries require that your passport be valid for six months after your return date. It is advisable to renew the passport no less than nine months before it's expiration date. Make a photocopy of the information page of your passport and the visa page(s) for your destination(s). Pack them separately from your passport.

Get vaccinations and stock up on medicine.

Depending on your destination, you may need to get special vaccinations as a precaution against certain diseases. For maximum protection, you should get any required shots six weeks before your departure date. If you are prescribed to take any medicine on the regular basis then make sure you have enough of it to cover the duration of your travels. Always pack your medicine, in its prescription bottles, in your carry-on bag. If you need to use syringes, make sure that you have a letter from your doctor.

Prepare your finances.

Choose one or two credit cards to take with you, and call the card providers shortly before your departure to inform them of which countries you will be visiting. Otherwise, if the companies see foreign charges with no notice that you're abroad, they might freeze your cards. It is advisable to use a bank card for monetary transactions rather than traveler's cheques. Traveller's cheques are not widely accepted and are exchanged at a less favorable rate.

Buy travel and health insurance

It is likely that your health insurance won't cover you while you're traveling abroad. Check your health insurance policy to see if it includes international coverage or not. If not, it is recommended to buy a short-term policy that will cover you while you're abroad, in case something should happen. Similarly, a smart way to protect your trip and your money is to purchase travel insurance. In that case, you can have your money refunded if your trip has to be canceled, postponed, for any reason.

Check for travel warnings and advisories

Before you travel abroad, refer whether the government of your country has issued any travel warning (for countries where long-term issues create a risky environment for travelers) or a travel alert (for countries with short-term conditions that may pose a threat to travelers) for your destination.

Make copies of travel documents.

Have at least one color copy of your Passport ID page and also make copies of any visas that pertain to your current travels. Hotel reservations, train ticket confirmations, and all other travel documents should be copied as well. It is convenient to have digital copies of all the important documents. But be sure that these items are saved to your device locally so that you can access them without an Internet connection.

Pack appropriately

Avoid carrying expensive things with you along with your journey. Only carry necessary electronics. If you do bring valuables carry them along with you or keep them locked up in the hotel safe. Also, try not to put valuables in your checked luggage, in case if you keep there, check carefully after going through security to ensure that all of your valuables are still in your carry-on.
