As we pass through the plains of Uttar Pradesh, transforming the scene scape from urban industrial towns to the vast Gangetic plains, adorned with vast expanse of pastures dotted with rice and mustard, are these green fields leading to the city of Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad). The city got its name from the origin of the Sanskrit word “Prayaga”, which means confluence.
With the advent of the Rig Veda era, Prayag is believed to be the greatest of the pilgrimage centres, probably because of the sacred rivers of Yamuna, Ganga which meets in this holy town. The words Yamuna and Ganga can also be found in the Indian National Anthem thereby displaying the sacrosanct of thee two rivers. The legend Mahabaratha mentions a third river Saraswati which joins the above two rivers and hence the word Triveni Sangam was coined to show the confluence of Yamuna, Ganga and Saraswati Rivers. It is said one who dies at the Sangam is freed from the cycle of re-birth and attains salvation.
The city of Prayag has an estimated population of 2.0 million and is the seventh most populace city in Uttar Pradesh. The city is the judicial capital of Uttar Pradesh with the Allahabad High Court being the highest judicial body in the state, inspite of Lucknow being the capital city of the State. The city was in the fore front of national importance during the Indian freedom struggle movement.
Some of the major tourist attractions in Prayag are mentioned below:-

The tombs of Jehangir, his queen Shah Begum, and his child Khusrau Mirza. There are intricate carvings, inscriptions on each of the mausoleums and the vast expanse of gardens interspersed with rose plantation is a must see for visitors.

The museum has pictures, artefacts, pertaining to art, history, literature and therefore brings out History, culture, and heritage of India. Other interesting exhibits include rock sculptures, miniature paintings, and terracotta exhibits to add value to the exhibits displayed in the museum.
Motilal Nehru, the father of Jawahar Lal Nehru, bought this house in the 1930’s. During the pre-Independence regime, it served as the head quarters of Indian National Congress. This is a two storey building with a sprawling portico and lawn and since been converted in to a museum, showcasing the pre-independence freedom struggle. The artefacts include furniture that was in use during the erstwhile period imported from both China and Europe. A lush green expanse of greenery nicely manicured located on the banks of the River Yamuna forms the back drop of this park. The park houses four lion sculptures made from white stone and was contributed by Earl of Minto in 1910. It was formerly known as Madan Mohan Malviya Park.
Perhaps, the most exquisite of the sight of Prayag, is the confluence of two holy rivers. The mid stream is the best place to go on a boat and see the actual merging of River Ganga with River Yamuna, as the waters of both the rivers are different and they converge in what is known as Triveni Sangam point.
