Goa’s Grand Spiritual Carnival: St. Francis Xavier Exposition: A Decade Of Interlude

19 May 2024

The State of Goa lies along the West sea coast abutting the Arabian Sea in India. The state is sandwiched between Karnataka on the South and East and Maharashtra State in the North. The uniqueness of this State is that it has a lot of Portuguese influence as it was under the rule of Portugal till the year 1961.

Goa the cynosure of tourist destinations:

Fun, frolic and fenny are the 3 words one could think of when describing Goa. For the discerning traveller, it is perhaps the most ideal moment to plan the vacation during the Christmas holidays, as the State comes alive with carnival of sorts during the Christmas, New Year season. The destination itself is a laid back destination as numerous activities can be witnessed in grandeur when visiting Goa. The importance of Goa, as a tourist destination hardly needs any elaboration. Many Europeans during the season prefer Goa as a Christmas holiday, as it gives the same feel, ambience, as a European holiday, largely because of the Portugal influence and they connect very easily.  This year is very special as St. Francis Xavier’s exposition is to take place.

What is special in the year 2024, to make Goa even more attractive?

The Historical perspective, of the Saint dates back to1552.  He was an evangelist, and believed in spreading Roman Catholic sect of Christianity in India. He was also a philanthropist and helped the poor and needy during his stay in India.

He was to proceed to China, but even before setting his journey, he passed away. The mortal remains were sent to Malacca before being brought to Goa. Initially the body was kept in St.Pauls’ college, (Now in ruins), before being shifted back to Basilica of Bom Jesus, which remained the permanent abode of the Saint. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is known as an architectural marvel as the facade of the church has shades of Ionic, Doric, Corinthian, and composite styles. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is among the group of “Churches and Convents of Goa” listed as a World Heritage site in 1986.

The layout of the church is indeed exquisite, matching contemporary European standards. With an elongated hall, flanked by both sides, separated by a row of columns, making the aisle look spacious. The mortal remains is placed in a glass container for transparent viewing, which is encased in a silver casket. Local artisans, especially the silversmiths from Goa were employed to create a blend of both Italian and Indian art. This 400 year old casket underwent extensive repairs last year making it fit for display. It will be of interest to note that the body of St. Francis Xavier still appears fresh and no chemicals and preservatives are added which remains a mystery even till today. It is for this reason apart from the holy significance, and the display of the remains once every ten years; has revered as atourist spot for visitors coming from all across the globe. It certainly is a spiritual event looked with eagerness, knowing full well the next exposition will only take place in 2034.

What are the dates specified for this year’s event of viewing Saint Xavier’s remains?

Being an event that happens once in 10 years, a lot of tourist traffic is expected from overseas visitors. Goa will become a hot bed of activity and the dates announced for the exposition is November 21, 2024 until January 5, 2025.
