The layout of the church is indeed exquisite, matching contemporary European standards. With an elongated hall, flanked by both sides, separated by a row of columns, making the aisle look spacious.

The mortal remains are placed in a glass container for transparent viewing, which is encased in a silver casket. Local artisans, especially the silversmiths from Goa were employed to create a blend of both Italian and Indian art. This 400 year old casket underwent extensive repairs last year making it fit for display.

It will be of interest to note that the body of St. Francis Xavier still appears fresh and no chemicals and preservatives are added which remains a mystery even till today. It is for this reason apart from the holy significance, and the display of the remains once every ten years; has been revered as a tourist spot for visitors coming from all across the globe. It certainly is a spiritual event looked on with eagerness, knowing full well the next exposition will only take place in 2034.
